Setting Up Your Meta Ads
Boosted posts are a dead end — they live on your personal profile, limit your targeting, and don’t give you real campaign data. Proper Meta Ads run through Meta Ads Manager inside a Business Portfolio. This guide walks you through the full setup. Plan for about 30–45 minutes if you have everything ready.
What you need ready
Gather these before you start — you’ll need them at various points along the way.
- A personal Facebook account under your real, legal name
- Access to your email inbox — you’ll receive verification codes
- Your business email address (the one you use with customers)
- A credit card or PayPal enabled for online purchases
- Your business name, address, and website URL
- Your existing Facebook Business Page — or you’ll create one in Step 3
Prep your personal Facebook profile
Before Meta will let you run ads, your personal profile needs to meet a few requirements. Do each of these now if you haven’t already.
This is required to access Business Manager. Go to:
Settings & Privacy → Settings → Security and Login → Two-Factor Authentication
Use an authenticator app (Google Authenticator or Authy) rather than SMS where possible.
This is now mandatory in 2026. Go to:
Settings & Privacy → Account Overview → Contact Information → Add Email Address
Enter your business email. You’ll get a verification code at both that address and your primary email — confirm both.
Meta requires this before you can show ads. Go to:
Settings & Privacy → Account Overview → Ad Preferences
Make sure both “advertising” and “personalized advertising” are enabled.
In 2026, Meta may ask you to create a passkey for identity verification during setup. If this screen appears, follow the steps — it only takes a minute.
Create your Business Portfolio
The Business Portfolio — what used to be called “Business Manager” — is the central container for your Page, Ad Account, Pixel, and team access. Everything lives here.
→ business.facebook.comMobile works, but desktop is smoother for initial setup. Log in with your personal Facebook account when prompted.
If this is your first time here, Meta will walk you through creating your first Business Portfolio.
Enter your business name (not your personal name), your name, and your business email. Click Submit.
Check your inbox for a confirmation email from Meta and click the link. Your Business Portfolio is now active.
Connect your Facebook Business Page
Your Facebook Business Page must be linked to your Business Portfolio before you can run ads. If you don’t have a Page yet, you’ll create one now.
Find this in the left sidebar under Business Settings.
If you already have a Facebook Page, select it from the list. If not, choose “Create a new Facebook Page” and follow the prompts.
It should now be listed under Accounts → Pages. All campaigns will run on behalf of this Page.
Create your Ad Account
The Ad Account is where campaigns, budgets, and billing actually live. Think of the Business Portfolio as the filing cabinet — the Ad Account is the active drawer where spend happens.
Find this inside your Business Portfolio settings.
Use your business name (e.g. “Smith Plumbing Ads”). This is internal — customers never see it.
Select USD and your correct time zone (Eastern Time for Florida). Take your time here — these cannot be changed after the account is created.
Your Ad Account will appear in your Business Portfolio. New accounts typically start with a 1–2 account limit — this increases as you build spend history with Meta.
Add a payment method
Meta won’t let you run any ads until a valid payment method is on file. This is tied to your Ad Account specifically.
You can also reach this through Business Portfolio Settings → Payment Methods.
Choose a credit card or PayPal. Credit card is preferred. Make sure your card is enabled for online purchases — call your bank if you’re unsure.
Meta may place a small temporary charge (usually $1 or less) to verify the card. This is normal and is refunded automatically.
Create your Meta Pixel
The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code that tracks visitor actions on your website — form fills, phone clicks, page views. Without it you can’t measure whether your ads are generating real leads. You create it here; IdeaSwell handles the installation on your site.
Find this in the left sidebar under Business Settings.
Give it a clear name like “Your Business Name Pixel.” Enter your website URL when asked.
When Meta asks how you want to install it, click through without completing. IdeaSwell will handle the code installation on your WordPress site.
Once the Pixel is created, confirm it’s connected to your Ad Account under Ad Account settings. Meta may prompt you to do this automatically.
Grant IdeaSwell access
The last step is adding IdeaSwell as a Partner to your Business Portfolio. This is how agencies manage client accounts — you don’t share your login. You grant controlled access and remain the owner of everything.
Look for “Business Partners” or “Partners” in the left sidebar of Business Settings.
You’ll be prompted to enter a Partner Business ID. Wait until IdeaSwell sends this to you directly — don’t enter anything until you receive it.
You’ll share three assets — your Facebook Page, your Ad Account, and your Pixel. Each one has its own role setting. See the table below for what to assign and why.
Hit confirm, then send Clayton a message or email. We’ll verify access on our end and confirm when we’re ready to start building.
Understanding access levels — Facebook Page
Meta separates Page access into distinct roles. Here’s how they differ and why the role you assign matters:
| What IdeaSwell can do | Admin (Full Control) | Editor (Partial Control) | Advertiser |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create and run ads using your Page | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Publish and schedule posts, Reels, Stories | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Respond to comments and messages | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Update Page info, category, CTA button | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
| Manage who else has access to the Page | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
| Access all Page settings and configurations | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
| Recommended role for IdeaSwell | ✓ Preferred | Limited | Too limited |
Ad Account and Pixel roles
For your Ad Account and Pixel, assign the Advertiser role. This is the correct and standard level for an agency managing campaigns — it covers full campaign creation, budget management, and reporting.
What happens next
Once IdeaSwell confirms Partner access, we take it from there. We’ll install your Pixel on the site, verify it’s firing correctly, and begin building out your first campaign structure. Typical turnaround from confirmed access to first live ad is 5–7 business days.
